Commission hears of Ironwood tire collection effort set for next week

IRONWOOD - Plans for a special tire collection for city of Ironwood residents were discussed by the city commission on Monday.

Code enforcement officer Jason Alonen said the collections will be held next week behind the Ironwood Public Safety Department building on McLeod Avenue.

From Monday through Thursday of next week, tires may be deposited from 8 a.m. through 3 p.m.

No more than 10 tires can be discarded per residence.

The collection times for Friday, Sept. 21, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the Saturday, Sept. 22, hours will be from 8 a.m. to noon, Alonen said.

The collection effort is possible through a scrap tire grant received by the city, according to city manager Scott Erickson.

Erickson noted the city's fall cleanup day is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, at the vacant lots on Ayer Street. It will be similar to the annual spring clean-up effort.

The hours will be 8 to 11 a.m.

Erickson said JROTC cadets will again assist the city and volunteers in unloading the refuse. Any volunteers who'd like to lend a hand for the morning effort will be welcome, he added.

On another topic, Erickson said the final grading and paving of Ayer and Easy streets is planned for today and Thursday.

Fall flushing of fire hydrants is planned for Sunday and residents can expect some discoloration of water.

Discoloration in the water system that occurred on Monday was the result of an ongoing project, city commissioners learned.
