Edith Irene Saari

HURLEY, Wis. – Edith Irene Saari, 95, died on Oct. 27, 2018 in Hurley.

Edith was born in Ironwood, Mich. to John Sigfrid and Jennie Maria (Luoma) Berg on June 29, 1923. She attended local schools and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1940.

On January 26, 1946, she married Eugene Saari, and they lived in Milwaukee until moving "back home" to the Saari family farm in Kimball, Wisc. in July, 1976. Edith worked for Allis Chalmers in research, at GE X-Ray and Johnson Control in research and development.

Until recent years, Edith was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ironwood and a member of the Paula Circle. She and her husband were members of the Eagle Bluff Golf Club where they spent many hours enjoying the sport. Edith was also a member of the Kimball Homemakers, Hurley Bowl 'Em League, Iron County Farmer's Market and Iron County Citizens.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing on the trails on the Saari farm, as well as hunting deer and birds on the farm. She and Gene would camp, traveling places to fish, especially fly fishing with flies made by Gene. Her garden was a passion. She often provided huge bunches of beautiful daffodils to the church in the spring as well as sharing them with her friends. She and Gene grew delicious fruits and vegetables in their gardens.

In her later years she lived at Villa Vista in Hurley. There she met new friends and enjoyed coffee time daily at 3 p.m. On Wednesdays she enjoyed wine and treats with friends on the porch at the Villa.

She is survived by Gene's sister and brother-in-law, LaVerne and Leonard Bartolutti, several nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband; her sister, Jennie Ruth Mildred Stange; Ruth's husband, Carl and their daughter, Patricia and her sister, Esther Edla Strick, Esther's husband, Edward Frank Strick Sr. and Gene's brother, Clifford Saari, and Clifford's wives, Doris and Iris.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 111 S. Curry Street, Ironwood, on Friday, Nov. 2, with a visitation from 10 am until the time of service at 11 am.
