Carol Jean (Leinonen) Lindberg

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Carol Jean (Leinonen) Lindberg, 86, a long-time resident of Ironwood Township, passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 2, 2018.

Carol was born on Dec. 19, 1931, in Ironwood, a daughter of Matthew and Linnea (Krankkala) Leinonen. She grew up on the family farm on Airport Road. Carol attended Luther L. Wright High School and graduated in 1950. She continued her education at Gogebic Community College.

On Sept. 20, 1952, Carol was united in marriage to the love of her life, Roland Keith Lindberg. They made their home in White Pine.

In 1960, Carol and Roland moved to Ironwood Township where they built their home on Lake Road at the base of Maple Hill Bluff on a piece of property formerly owned by the Johnson Farms.

Since Carol enjoyed being outdoors, she took great pleasure gardening and doing all types of yardwork. She was proficient at sewing. Carol loved hosting delicious meals for special occasions and baking a variety of scrumptious breads and cookies. She had countless cookbooks and had fun trying new recipes. Carol was very proud of having several of her favorite recipes published in local cookbooks. One of her other interests was writing letters to relatives and friends.

In later years, Carol often reminisced with her beloved husband about the wonderful times they had together at the family cottage on beautiful Lake Gogebic. It was a special place to welcome family and friends during their 40 years of ownership.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Carol is survived by a son, Craig, Ironwood Township; her sister-in-law, Mary Leinonen, North Port, Fla .; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roland, on Aug. 9, 2017; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Gloria Leinonen, in childhood, and Elaine and Herbert Swanbeck; a brother, Vernon Leinonen; and a nephew, Gary Swanbeck.

Cremation will take place, and there will be no funeral service.

Private interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, in the spring.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the caring staff at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community for their excellent care, comfort and friendship.
