MERCER, Wis. — Mercer Library Director Teresa Schmidt discussed the basics of building a website Thursday during a class on the basics of using WordPress.

Schmidt gave an overview of the various stages of building a website during her WordPress 101 presentation and answered questions from those in attendance.

After discussing choosing a domain name and hosting company, Schmidt opened up a WordPress Dashboard and showed the various key parts of a WordPress site.

This included choosing a theme and plugins for a site and how those choices will impact how the various parts of the site looks to visitors.

She said most websites today should use responsive web design, which allows them to be viewed on various sized screens — a key feature given the prevalence of smart phones. She also said that websites are now designed with content in a series of rows stretching across the page. The rows can contain anything from text and images to videos.

Regarding choosing a company to host the site, Schmidt said there are numerous hosting companies to choose from, with the prices varying among companies and services included.

Schmidt also explained the difference between making pages and posts on a site, with pages remaining largely static and posts being updated or changed frequently.

After the program, Schmidt said she was considering offering a similar class and a more advanced class in the coming months.
