Folks turn out for Superior Snowshoe walk

IRONWOOD - Eighty-five people participated in the seventh annual Mark Fitting Memorial snowshoe walk Wednesday evening.

It was the start of the region's weekly Wednesday night Superior Snowshoe walks.

"We had another good turnout," said organizer Sam Davey afterwards. "Conditions were great."

This week's walk started and ended at the Michigan Information Center on U.S. 2 on a trail that begins in the parking lot and heads south along the Montreal River to Riverside Cemetery and back.

The annual kickoff to the weekly snowshoe walks remembers Mark Fitting, who was a big proponent of silent sports in the area.

The weekly walks start at 6:30 p.m. and continue through mid-March, each on a different trail. Most weeks have a designated restaurant or tavern at which to gather afterwards.

Fitting said most of the trails are a mile and a half to two miles long and take people between 45 minutes to over an hour to complete. "Everyone goes at their own pace and we have someone to sweep the trail afterwards to make sure we didn't leave anyone behind," he said.

Next week's Wednesday night Superior Snowshoe walk will be on the Iron Belle Trail beginning in Bessemer.
