Learning opportunities abound at Mercer Library

MERCER, Wis. — The Mercer Library will host several classes in January and February on topics ranging from small business marketing to technology to personal organization.

Local residents can learn more about the services offered by area public libraries in a free workshop, “Becoming a Library Superuser,” on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m.

Attendees will learn how to access the library’s catalog online, request books from all over Wisconsin, access databases of newspapers and magazines, download free eBooks and audiobooks and take online classes, said Library Director Teresa Schmidt.

These services are available to card holders from Iron and Vilas county libraries and other libraries in the Northern Waters Library Service, and all are welcome at the class. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop if they have one, said Schmidt.

Small businesses and organizations are invited to a “Business Bites” lunch workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 20. Lunch will be provided by the Friends of the Mercer Library with a suggested donation of $5. This program is sponsored by the library, the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Iron County Development Zone. Call the chamber at 715-476-2389 to register for the program.

Schmidt will offer several technology classes this month: “WordPress 101” on Thursday at 11 a.m., “Becoming a Savvy Tech Shopper” on Feb. 7 at 11 a.m., and “iPad Basics and Beyond” on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. All classes are available to attendees of all skill levels, and there will be time for questions.

The library will also offer Tech Tuesdays for drop-in technology help today, Feb. 5 and Feb. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. These free sessions offer one-on-one help with your laptop, smartphone, tablet and other gadgets.

The library will also present “Bullet Journaling for Beginners” on Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. “Find out more about the analog planning system that’s taking the digital world by storm, and how you can keep life organized with just a notebook and pen,” said Schmidt.

All classes are free and open to the public.
