Winter keeps on wintering; 7 inches falls on Range, more snow expected

IRONWOOD - The National Weather Service's Winter Storm Warning for Thursday was spot on as snow filled the air for much of the late morning, all afternoon and into the evening across the Gogebic Range.

The NWS in Marquette had a report of 7.5 inches of snow in Ironwood by late afternoon. The official 24-hour snow total scheduled for this morning at the Wastewater Treatment Facility in Ironwood will give an official number.

While the forecast calls for a slight chance of snow today with a high of 28 and partly cloudy skies on Friday with a high reaching 32, a NWS official in Marquette has his eyes on a potential "big storm forming Saturday night moving into Sunday that could bring a substantial amount of snow."

The storm will be accompanied with a lot of wind from the northwest, bringing blowing and drifting snow into the day on Sunday.

Saturday's forecast otherwise calls for a chance of wintery mix with a high of 34 and Sunday will be blustery with snow and high of 26.

Temperatures look turning colder next week with forecasted highs of 12 on Monday, and 15 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Normal highs this time of year are in the mid to high 20s.

The season snow total to date before Thursday's significant snow fall was 137.4 inches, just more than 6 inches behind the average for this point in the season.

Today's record high is 51 degrees in 1961 and minus 22 in 2008.
