Ironwood - Gogebic Community College's Mt. Zion ski season will close Sunday.

Pam Zupan said the slopes at Mt. Zion are perfect for her 12-year-old granddaughter, Alyssa.

"This is her second year she has been snowboarding," she said.

The hill isn't over crowded and many of her granddaughter's friends ski or snowboard there, she said, adding her granddaughter has a season pass.

Zupan was surprised this is the last weekend Mt. Zion is open.

"There is still a lot of base left on there," she said.

Aaron Hoff, a GCC freshman, works part-time in as a ski technician in the Mt. Zion chalet and has plans to study biblical counseling in Indiana.

He said working at one of the local ski hills for 4 years gave him the experience needed to wax skis and snowboards.

When a position opened up at the college, he applied.

Waxing helps protect the board and allows for a faster ride, he added.

With the season coming to a close he said, many people apply a coat of wax before putting their equipment in storage.

Hoff said closing the hill with snow still on the slopes is not easy.

"Come enjoy the snow while you still can," he said.
