Betty (Gill) Carlson

BOERNE, Texas - Betty (Gill) Carlson, 98, of Boerne, passed away after a short illness on Sunday, March 31, 2019, with family by her side.

Betty was born on Nov. 11, 1920, to the late John Gill and Esther (Newberg) Gill. Betty grew up in Ironwood, Mich., and graduated in 1938 from Luther L. Wright High School. She attended Gogebic Community College and worked for the Ironwood School District prior to her marriage to Eugene Carlson, also of Ironwood, in 1942.

Betty and Eugene lived in Montreal and Hurley, Wis., until 1964 when Eugene was transferred to Hoyt Lakes, Minn. Betty and Eugene lived in Hoyt Lakes until Eugene's retirement in 1984 when they returned to Hurley. Betty and Eugene were married for 59 years until Eugene's passing in 2001. After Eugene's death Betty moved to Boerne, Texas to be closer to family.

Betty was a true lady of grace and Christian faith and strongly believed in the power of prayer. She was a member of the Boerne United Methodist Church. Prior to her move to Texas, she was a longtime member of the former Bethany Covenant Church, and the Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood.

Betty loved attending church, playing bridge, cooking, visiting with her friends and family, taking long scenic car rides, people watching, and shopping. She was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, and loved to watch the San Antonio Spurs. Betty was a sweet, loving, caring, and proud mother, grandmother, great grandmother, wife and friend, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; brothers, John F. Gill and Wallace Shymanski; and sisters, Agnes M. Gill and Delphine L. Gill. She is survived by her daughter, Janice (John) Donner of Boerne; two sons, John Carlson of Loretto, Minn. and Jeffrey (Karen) Carlson of Tucson, Ariz .; four grandchildren, John (Heather) Donner, Jill Donner, Dr. Christopher (Rachel) Carlson, and Dr. Kevin Carlson; five great-grandchildren, Nathan Azar, Tucker Azar, Carli Azar, Heath Donner, and Graham Donner.

A memorial service is pending and will be held at the Boerne United Methodist Church in Boerne. A committal service and internment will take place this summer at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
