James "Jim" McHugh

IRONWOOD, Mich. — James “Jim” McHugh, 69, of Ironwood, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2019, at his home.

Jim was born on March 30, 1950, in Oakland, Calif., a son of Thomas and Lila (Manninen) McHugh. He attended Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood and graduated in 1968. He continued his education at Gogebic Community College, Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University.

Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Tullibee as a radioman. He was a member of the Ironwood American Legion Post 5.

Jim was an extremely talented photographer, avid reader, excellent cook and enjoyed back roads traveling.

He retired as a supervisor from the New York State Department of Transportation.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, Shirley Rhenlund; two stepdaughters, Nicole Fiorino-Crane (Joe) and Erica Fiorino; three step-grandchildren, Mia, Joey and Vinny; two sisters, Sue Trolla (Butch) and Mary Gribble; a brother, Tom (Arlene); numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and countless friends, including his “porch monkeys.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; a sister, Carole; and his brother-in-law, Jack Gribble.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.
