Prom season, an annual rite of spring where area youth dress to the 9s and enjoy an evening out with their classmates will begin this weekend.

Three area high schools will celebrate prom on Saturday — Ironwood, Hurley and Ontonagon.

Ironwood’s junior class will host the prom at the Memorial Building in downtown Ironwood. The grand march is planned for 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:10, with music and dancing to follow.

Thirty couples have signed up to attend to the evening themed “Diamonds in the Rough.”

“We’ve got some really exciting things, a lot of sparkle and bling,” said Ironwood teacher and prom advisor Kathy Saari, adding some of the couples have been taking dancing lessons in advance. Colors for the evening include black, red, grey and white.

Hurley’s special evening will begin with the grand march in the school auditorium at 6 p.m. The party will then move to the Kimball Community Center for dinner and dancing until 11.

The evening’s theme is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” according to teacher and prom advisor Nicole Giancola.

Thirty couples plan to attend. Giancola said while the event is called a junior prom, others may attend, but the junior class planned the event and will reign, as a king and queen from the class of 2020 will be crowned.

The theme for Saturday’s prom in Ontonagon is “Rustic Romance,” according to advisor Betsy Guilbault. A grand march will be in the school gym at 7:30 p.m., followed by the dance in the cafeteria. Decorations are in cream, barn red and gold.

The A.D. Johnston High School of Bessemer is holding prom at the Memorial Building in Ironwood on Saturday, May 4.

The junior class has planned an evening celebrating the Roaring 20s. “Jump into the past with us for a Great Gatsby jazz-age experience with Art Deco geometric designs of the era to remember,” said an invitation.

Doors will open at 8 p.m., with the grand march planned for 8:30 and dancing to follow.

Watersmeet will also celebrate prom on May 4. Under a theme of “A Night of Enchantment,” the dance will be held in a decorated cafeteria from 8 p.m. to midnight. The grand march is set for 9.

Two more area proms will be held Saturday, May 11, for Wakefield-Marenisco and Mercer schools.

At Wakefield-Marenisco, the grand march will be held in the gym at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing in the band room.

The Mercer prom will be held at the Wolf’s Den from 7 to 11 p.m., with the grand march at 7:30.

Finally, Ewen-Trout Creek has planned its prom for the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 25. There will be a grand march at 8:30 p.m., followed by the dance in the cafetorium from 9 to midnight.
