ONTONAGON — “Step Up Your Business,” a workshop designed for business owners in the area, will be held Thursday, May 16 in Ontonagon.

The Ontonagon Downtown District Authority is hosting the workshop, sponsored by the Michigan Small Business Development Center and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, that will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On May 16 at the Ontonagon Village Council Chambers. There is no cost for the workshop. It will also be available as a webinar presentation.

Topics in the seminar include: funding opportunities for training employees through Michigan Works, funding opportunities, marketing fundamentals, digital and social media marketing and understanding your financial position.

Speakers will include Laura Marohnic and Nicole Young Potvin of the SBDC, with local business owner presentations by Kitty Kleinhulzen and Scott Roehm.

Business owners can pre-registers online, through Facebook.or, can attend walk-ins on the day of the event, according to Mike Burzynski, Community Development Fellow with Project Rising Tide. Refreshments will be provided and lunch served at noon.

Burzynski said that business owners are encouraged to attend and take advantage of networking with their fellow business owners, share the vision for the district, and gain new insight for their business models. He continued, “It is also an opportunity to be introduced to current business innovations and available opportunities that will enhance their operations and provide for new prospective and models to promote their business.”

He noted that the workshop would also be a good place for those people in or outside of Ontonagon who may be considering starting a new business. “Ontonagon is on the western shore of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula just a short distance from the Porcupine Mountains, with a progressive DDA, a vibrant arts community, parks, festivals and more. There is something for everyone in Ontonagon,” Burzynski commented.
