Marenisco Historical Society to hold stage coach robbery talk

MARENSICO — The Marensico Township Historical Society is sponsoring a presentation on local stage coach robber Reimund Holzhey later this month.

The presentation by local historian Bruce Cox will take place at 6 p.m. May 14 at the township museum on Center Street.

Holzhey is credited with the last stage coach robbery in the state when he held up a stage carrying four prominent bankers on their way to vacation at Lake Gogebic Aug. 26, 1889, according to information on the Michigan State University libraries’ website.

One of the bankers, A. G. Feischein, was killed in the subsequent shootout with Holzhey, who was 22 at the time of the robbery.

Cox wrote a book on Holzhey and the incident.

The presentation is free of charge and the museum will be open for 30 minutes prior to the presentation, as well as after.
