Hurley - Members of Iron County Outdoor Recreation Enthusiasts and other supporters of the local non-motorized trails came together Saturday afternoon for a work bee at the Hurley trailhead.

Organizers were pleased with the turnout for the work event, with around 20 volunteers coming throughout the day to lend a hand with the various projects.

"I'm surprised how many people showed up. There were a lot of events (today) and it was the opening day of fishing season," ICORE treasure Bob Traczyk said.

He joked as a fisherman, he was glad the event started in the afternoon so he could hit the water early in the morning.

The group tackled several tasks at the trailhead located between U.S. 51 and the Montreal River; including making a native pollinators garden, planting trees and grass seed and picking up garbage and debris that had gathered over time.

Several volunteers also helped clear a path through the brush between the parallel motorized and non-motorized trails to allow people to walk from the trailhead down to the river.

At the nearby Iron County Farmers Market pavilion, volunteers worked staining wooden benches and tables that will be installed at a later date.

Traczyk said it was a great day for the event, with nice weather and it early enough in the season that the bugs weren't out bothering the volunteers.

Along with beautifying the trailhead, ICORE hopes to eventually put in a parking lot at the trailhead and work continues toward expanding the trail west from the trailhead through Hurley and toward a planned trailhead in the city of Montreal.
