Ironwood - New tuition rates were approved by the Gogebic Community College Board of Trustees Tuesday evening.
An increase of $4 per credit hour for in-district tuition and $5 per credit for out-of-district, the Wisconsin reciprocity area, and out-of-state students was approved. New tuition rates will be $124 per credit hour for in-district students, $175 per credit hour for Michigan out-of-district and the Wisconsin reciprocity area, and $204 per credit hour for out-of-state tuition.
"Gogebic Community College continues to offer competitive tuition rates compared to other colleges and universities," said Erik Guenard, vice president of business services and interim president. "Student tuition and fees comprise 39% of the college's operating revenue. An additional 46% comes from state appropriations and 14% from local property taxes. The remaining 1% comes from miscellaneous sources."
The tuition rate for dual enrollment and early college students (non-fifth year) will also be increased by $4 per credit.
The impact of the increase for the average full-time student will be $60 for in-district students, and $75 for all others. The revenue generated is projected at $91,629.
Other actions taken by the board included:
-Employment contracts for non-affiliated staff were approved and will be in effect from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.
-The school announced that it will not have a volleyball program next year due to a lack of a coach and that baseball will begin to be a college sport next year.
-January of 2020 will mark 50 years that GCC has been operating on the present campus. Plans for a celebration are being considered.
-Updates on the welding and skilled trades building were discussed. Bids are still being processed for work on the facility, with only tentative completion dates.
-Three new staff members were welcomed by the board. They are Joe Urbaniak, who joined GCC as a network and technical specialist; Leah Benson, the new bookstore manager; and Aaron Froehlich, manager of campus suites and assistant baseball coach.
