Ironwood Township - The Gogebic County Road Commission stated Lake Road will be closed for culvert replacement beginning 7 a.m. Monday through 4 p.m. June 22.

The closure will be located approximately 11 miles north of Airport Road through Brace Road. Access to Little Girls Point County Park will require using Wisconsin State Highway 122 or Powers Road GCRC engineer for Phil Strong said.

"It's (a segment of Powers Road) a narrow one lane road so it's not advisable for campers," he said.

The purpose of the project is to remove and replace 10 culverts on Lake road before Northwoods Paving, from Ashland Wis., repaves the road.

Strong said the culvert portion of the project will cost $425,000 which will be completed using county workers as well as Snow County Contracting out of Bessemer.

The county plans on "investing" $639,000 in repaving of Lake Road up to Little Girl's Point, of which 80% is paid for by federal Surface Transportation Program funds, he said.

"We get a certain amount of funding each year," he said. "We are using all our funds from the state of Michigan this year to go towards this paving project."

Strong said lake road has been deteriorating over a number of years and is the second busiest county road in the county which attracts a lot of tourists.

He asked for the public to be patient with the construction process and said GCRC is doing what it can to improve the roads with the available funds.

"It's a short term impact for a long term solution," Strong said.
