Harold Byron Amos

ONTONAGON, Mich. - Harold Byron Amos, 80, of Ontonagon, passed away June 1, 2019 at Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.

Harold was born in Hancock to Harold J. and Hilma (Kuurila) Amos of Greenland on March 4, 1939. He was a 1957 graduate of Mass High School. He attended Suomi College and received his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Northern Michigan University, Marquette in 1962. He married Irene Kalivoda on Aug. 8, 1970, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Greenland.

As a youth, Harold loved to fish, hunt, play baseball and garden, which continued to be passions throughout his lifetime. His shared his love of hunting with his many dog companions. He shared the fruits of his labor in the garden with friends, neighbors and family. He spent countless hours at camp working in the garden, cutting wood, mowing, and instilling a sound work ethic in his children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong Detroit Tigers and Green Bay Packers fan.

Harold was a teacher in Rockland, Mass and Ontonagon Area Schools for 35 years. He taught social sciences, driver education, adult education and was athletic director for several years. He was a long time MHSAA official for football and basketball.

Harold was an Ontonagon County Commissioner for 14 years during which he served as a member of the Mental Health Board. He was a member of the Economic Development Corporation. Harold was appointed by the Governor as the Upper Peninsula representative for Commission on Aging. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, a third degree member of Knights of Columbus Council 2931, and served communion to home bound parishioners. He was a volunteer driver for the Commission on Aging.

After his retirement from teaching, Harold obtained his realtor and appraiser license working for 12 years in this profession.

Harold is survived by his wife, Irene; daughter, Tracey (Tim) Rader; son, Tim (Tana) Amos; brother, John (Marjorie) Amos; 12 grandchildren, Tara, TJ, Aunica, Esera, Elijah, Jacob, Athena, Jackson, Ethan, Julianna, Emma and Jordan; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his faithful companion, Sadie.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at noon, Saturday, June 8, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon with Father Michael J. Jacobus officiating. Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the service. Luncheon will be served in the Parish Hall following the services.

Pallbearers are Brian Amos, Frank Wardynski, RJ Wardynski, Phil Voss, Tony Vezzetti and Jeff Hokkanen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ontonagon Area Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 92, Ontonagon, MI 49953.

The family of Harold Amos would like to extend sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses at the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital.
