Hurley - Elemetary students at the Hurley K-12 School spent Friday, their last day of class, at a Hawaiian-themed picnic sponsored by the Parent Teacher Organization.

Steve Lombardo, elementary principal, said they are sending the students off in style.

"Our fine PTO has a number of different stations set up all throughout the school," he said.

Children at the picnic raced from station to station following a schedule of events such as minnow racing, beachball volleyball, kickball and a bounce house.

Older students who volunteered to assist at the event participated right along side their younger peers. Caden Krall, eighth grader said he wanted to be a part of the picnic so he could help out.

"I just remember when I was younger all the older kids helping out us," he said.

Hurley Fire Department members along with Iron County sheriff deputies were on scene giving the students the opportunity to see equipment and sit in a squad car.

Jason Geach, chief deputy of Iron County, said "It's fun to help the students enjoy their last day of school."

He said the event fosters relations with the children and helps show them officers are approachable and able to talk at anytime.

Lindsay Stafford, first grade teacher, said the end of year elementary picnic has become a tradition which students look forward to.

"They're just excited in general, "she said. "To have different activities that they don't normally get to do at school and see them having fun, it's a good feeling."

Stafford said the last day of school is "very emotional."

"One of my students brought me tissues today because I broke down a little bit yesterday," she said. Stafford is excited about her class moving on to second grade.

"You're proud of everything they accomplished," she said, "but you're still sad to see them go because you become a family."
