Sarah Ellen Mase-Wagner

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Sarah Ellen Mase-Wagner, 61, of Ontonagon, Mich. passed away Saturday evening, June 15, 2019, at the Mayo Clinic St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

She was born Sept. 28, 1957 in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Robert and Jane (Paterson) Mase and was a longtime resident of Ontonagon.

Sarah was a nationally recognized (2003) Soil Scientist with the U.S.D.A. Forest Service and a graduate of Virginia Tech University with a B.S. in Forestry.

She was employed by the U.S. Forest Service and retired as the Ottawa National Forest Soil Scientist in 2009 after 31 years of service and was instrumental in the comprehensive soils and ecological unit mapping of the Ottawa.

Sarah was a well-respected and loved member of her community and took great pride in her family, friends, career, and the protection of natural environments, and was happiest when outside hiking, cross-country skiing, or in her crafts room making quilts or knitting socks, mittens, hats, scarfs, and sweaters for her friends.

Sarah was also a longtime member of the Friends of the Porcupine Mountains, the chairperson of the Ontonagon Village Recreation Commission, and an active volunteer of the Ontonagon County Animal Protection (OCAP).

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Robert Wagner; sister Rebecca Crawford of Urbana, Ohio; two brothers, George E. Mase of Portland, Ore., and William A. Mase of Statesboro, Ga.

A private service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that contributions be made to the Ontonagon County Historical Society Lighthouse Fund "For Sarah Mase-Wagner", 422 River Street; or OCAP, 19504 M-38, both of Ontonagon, MI 49953.
