Robert T. Johnson Jr.

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Robert T. Johnson Jr., 58, a longtime resident of Ironwood, passed away peacefully following a lengthy illness on July 29, 2019.

Robert was born on July 9, 1961, in Regensburg, Germany to Robert and Sydney Johnson. His childhood was spent moving from base to base with his family then finally venturing out on his own after attending school in Council Grove, Kan.

Robert served in the U.S. Navy as a boiler technician on the USS Kitty Hawk. He then became an over the road truck driver until a serious motorcycle accident ended his driving career. Although in chronic pain he spent several years working at a mill then 15 years for a local flooring company as a forklift driver.

Robert followed his parents from Colorado to Mercer, Wis., then on to Ironwood where he was able to help them and they him. The road wasn't always easy, and there were many ups and downs, but he did his best to be there for those who needed him most.

Robert enjoyed riding his Harley, fishing, camping, shooting, gardening, and the Denver Broncos. Many Sundays were spent chatting with his baby sister and either cheering or moaning over Sunday's games.

Robert was never without his beloved Harley dog, who sadly passed away after 15 years. It wasn't until after his dad passed away, that his mom and baby sister were able to convince him that he needed another, and so entered Jack. They had five wonderful years together, and Jack will spend the rest of his days with family.

Robert always looked forward to visits from his son, Shane Micheal. He would start preparations way in advance; and in recent years, they had many fond reunions. Although well over a year away, he was already planning the trip for Shane Micheal's wedding.

Robert shared a special relationship with his mom. He would always do what he could to help her. He mowed the grass, plowed the snow, and performed whatever maintenance he could. He enjoyed taking her to see the big lake and always brought her special flowers just because.

Robert enjoyed special relationships with his son, mom and siblings. He is survived by his son, Shane Micheal Johnson, and his fiancée, Angela Kunkel; his loving and always caring mom, Sydney Johnson; big brother, Shane (Shiela) Johnson; his sister, friend and confidant, Valerie (Johnnie Day) Nordstrom; his baby sister and advocate, Angela (James) Inglis; and his nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Robert was predeceased by his father, Robert T. Johnson in 2013; and maternal and paternal grandparents.

A celebration of life is being planned by family on Robert's favorite holiday in the northwoods on July 4, 2020.
