Ontonagon demolition begins

ONTONAGON - The first of two demolition projects in Ontonagon was completed Thursday.

The home of the late Doug Filpula, which was adjacent to the Ontonagon Township Park, was demolished as part of a two part grant to both the township and Ontonagon village. The cabin and two adjacent buildings were torn down and seeding of the area completed.

The $10,875 project will provide a pad to enable the handicap access to the lake, according to Ontonagon Township Clerk Bill Chabot. "We are seeding the property to return the area to its natural state,' Chabot added. An old septic tank on the property was capped, and the township plans to add benches and picnic tables to the property.

The second part of the grant was one submitted by the village and will demolish the old Wager's Restaurant and Bar on River Street in Ontonagon. That work is expected to begin in the next few weeks, according to village officials.
