Bessemer — A portion of North Moore Street near Bluff Valley Park in Bessemer will be temporarily closed Tuesday for some sewer work.

The location of the work also means cars won’t be able to access Bluff Valley Park Tuesday, according to city manager Charly Loper.

“(People) can walk in from State Street, but the parking area will be very difficult to get to,” Loper said, referring to the park.

The city project is designed to repair a part of the sewer that was damaged in the June 2018 storm, when flooding caused damage in various parts of the county.

“As part of the Father’s Day storm last year, we got some (Federal Emergency Management Agency) funds to fix that up,” Loper said.

Although she hopes only a little bit of the road will need to be torn up and the work will be able to be completed Tuesday, the full scale of the project won’t be known until the work starts.

“We’re guessing it’s somewhere between 20 and 60 feet, but you never really know until you start (the work),” Loper said.

The project is funded through an approximately $8,000 FEMA grant, according to Loper, and the city has already received the money rather than needing to wait to be reimbursed.
