Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
MERCER, Wis. - Sandra L. (Gray) Eesley, 72, Mercer, passed away Monday, Sept. 16, 2019, at home surrounded by family.
The daughter of the late James and Anne (Tremback) Gray was born Aug. 7, 1947, in Chicago. In 1960 the family moved to Mercer and Sandra graduated from Mercer High School.
On May 7, 1983, Sandra married Danny Eesley at Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Ashland. Her passion for helping others led her to a job in Ashland with Human Services. When Sandy later moved back to Mercer she began working for Iron County Human Services in Hurley, where she continued to work until her retirement.
Sandy had a lifelong desire to do as much as she could for anyone in need. Not only did she work endlessly at her job to ensure everyone received adequate care, but she never stopped helping others. She was on the board for the Mercer Food Pantry. She insisted on having a large garden every year, not only because she enjoyed growing it, but because she wanted to be sure everyone could taste fresh vegetables. Sandy loved to cook and bake. If you stopped by her house you left with plenty of homemade goodies and, if you couldn't make it to the house, you were sure to receive a delivery. She also raised chickens and was certain a fresh farm egg was the best you could have.
Sandra loved fishing and was always ready for the next fishing trip. She enjoyed playing cards and Yahtzee, and even an occasional trip to the casino. Most of all, she loved spending time with others; hearing about their day, offering advice, or helping in whatever way she could. Her door was always open.
Survivors include her husband, Danny; siblings: Donald Gray, Phyllis Kountney, Pat (Don) Porcaro, Thomas Gray, and Wayne (Sue) Gray; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Leroy Kountney; and sisters-in-law, Gerry Gray and Rose Gray.
Friends are invited to gather with the family at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 2611 Garnett St., Mercer, from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Maria Joseph Kodiganti presiding. Burial will follow in the Mercer Cemetery.
