Ewen — Personnel issues were on the agenda at the recent Ewen-Trout Creek school board meeting. The district hired a new physical education/health teacher Tyler Thomas, of Negaunee. Thomas is a recent graduate of Northern Michigan University.

The board also accepted the resignation of first-grade teacher Kayla Peterson, who has accepted a position with the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District. The board thanked Peterson for her service.

E-TC Business Manager Tammy Gibson advised the board of a new hire for the bus driver position, pending on the completion of the necessary requirements. She also advised the board of the possible bulk fuel purchase from the Ontonagon County garage, bus bids, and that mechanic Dale Holmstrom will be utilized for any bus issues as no one applied for the mechanic’s position.

Superintendent Dave Radovich said he is in discussions with the state concerning retrieving a lost day due to there being less than 75% of the students in attendance because of snow. The state requires a district to have over 75% attendance to enable a school to consider it as one of the 180 days required for the count. Radovich would like the state to count the day of in-service, hosted by the district, with all area instructors to qualify as the one day missed. The board approved a possible make-up day on Feb. 17, President’s Day, if necessary.

In other action, the board:

—Scheduled the 2020 reorganization meeting for Jan. 22 at 5:45 p.m., with the regular board meeting to follow.

—Scheduled a special board meeting for a superintendent evaluation for Jan. 15 at 6 p.m.

—Held a closed session to review the school safety plan. That plan was then approved as presented.
