Ontonagon — The Ontonagon Township Board Tuesday approved a sign to be erected on the newest park in Ontonagon. The Douglas Filppula Sunset Park is adjacent to the Ontonagon Township Park on land purchased by the township. The late Doug Filppula lived on the land for many years and the home was torn down and the park erected to honor the former Ontonagon teacher.
Township Clerk Bill Chabot said signs will also indicate the new park is a “day park” with no camping. He said the park will have “picnic tables and an area for people to sit and enjoy Lake Superior.”
The township also plans to install a concrete pad to make it easier for the handicapped to access the property and beach area.
Chabot also reported a “Gnawly critter, thought to be a renegade squirrel,” got into the theater’s chandelier room in the township building and apparently chewed his way out by way of two windows.
“I don’t know if he was waiting for the next show,” Chabot said, but its unbelievable how much damage he did. He added it looked like what a beaver could do. “We set traps but the cagy creature did not fall for it.”
He said the squirrel must have escaped through the windows, as they have set traps and found no leavings. The clerk said the windows will be repaired.
In other action, the board indicated it has started the budget process, and changed its March annual meeting from March 10 to March 11 because of an election on March 10.
