Michael 'Don' Hitt

SALEM, Wis. - Michael Don Hitt died from cancer Jan. 8, 2020, in Salem, Wis.

He was born Jan. 14, 1957, in Los Angeles, Calif. to Robert W. and Patricia J. (Etter) Hitt. He grew up in San Jose, Calif., and Wildwood, Ill., attending Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Ill. Don married Mary Morello July 1986, in Kenosha. They moved to Hurley, in 1987, where they raised their family.

In his early years, Don worked as a sales representative and factory worker. After moving to Hurley, he worked for different radio stations and a local furniture store in Ironwood, Mich. In 2001, he and Mary opened their own furniture store in Ironwood; with a second store in Ashland, in 2008.

His hobbies included music - playing drums and singing in several local bands. Don was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. He loved baseball, Star Trek (all versions) and riding his Harley. Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Mich.

Don is survived by his children, Maija (Umar Williams) Hitt of St. Paul, Minn., Michelle (Brandon Miller) Hitt of Stevens Point, and Michael (Andrea Gonzales) Hitt of Montreal; his sisters, Sally Kupres of Salem, Catherine (Greg) Lessard of Camdenton, Mo., and Danielle Gorman of Camdenton, Mo .; and a brother Thomas (Linda) Hitt of Fayetteville, Ark. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Robert and Patricia Hitt; stepmother, Norma Hitt; uncle, Jack Etter; niece, Melissa DuBois; brother-in-law, George Kupres; and a father-in-law, Hank Morello.

Don spent his last four years with his sister Sally, who was also his best friend and caregiver for the past several months.

Private services will be held by Don's Family. Cremation has taken place.
