White Pine — Steel Fatigue was the cause of the collapse of the skating rink and recreation building in White Pine last week, according to the adjuster who examined the building.

The insurance company determination was reported at a meeting of citizens and Carp Lake Township Board on Thursday by Homer Colclasure, a board supervisor. He said the adjuster reported the 100-by-200 foot building was determined to be a “complete loss.”

When the roof collapsed it blew out the sides, Colclasure said.

The building was erected in 1975 by the White Pine Lions Club after a fund raising drive. The building served as a skating rink in the winter and as a venue for community events during the summer.

Colclasure said the building is insured and that the town is authorized to seek two bids on removal of the debris all the way down to the slab. Once the debris is cleared there will be another township meeting to decide wether or not to replace it.

The recreation center was very large and there may not be a need to build something that big again, Colclasure said. But that will be up to the residents, he said.

The debris will be hauled away as soon as possible, Colclasure said. The goal is to get the work done before the spring road restrictions are in effect.
