Carmel J. Schiavo

HURLEY, Wis. - Carmel J. Schiavo, 96, of Hurley, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at the Villa Maria Nursing Home in Hurley with his family by his side.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1923, son of Joseph and Domenica (Casarotto) Schiavo. He attended Cary Elementary School in Hurley.

Carmel served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific.

He worked at the Cary Mine until it closed, worked at a factory in California for a year, worked on the boats on the Great Lakes in Duluth, Minnesota, and then came back to Ironwood and worked at Bessemer Plywood Products for 10 years, retiring in 1978.

Carmel was a member of the Hurley American Legion Post 58, the Paisano Club of Upper Michigan and the Iron County Senior Citizens Association. He was an avid gardener, loved music and was a history buff. He was named volunteer of the year at the Hurley Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Domenica Schiavo; brothers, Geno, Alfred and Mero Schiavo; sisters, Flora Wheeler and Cisera Canalia; nephew, Eugene Schiavo; and niece, Nina Stumpf.

Carmel is survived by nieces, Esther Maki and Loretta Alessandroni both of Ironwood, Michigan, Bertha Pearson of Duluth, Minnesota, Joan Sobolewski of Milwaukee, Rose Marie Welke of Mt. Pleasant, California, and Shelley Schiavo and Cherri Gomez both of Orange, California; nephews, Andy Schiavo of Riverside, California and Bert Canalia of Ironwood; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley with Fr. Frank Kordek OFM as celebrant, preceded by a visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. A luncheon will follow at the Elk and Hound Restaurant at 10233 Country Club Road in Ironwood.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hurley in the spring.
