Daily Globe's Juno, Jenkins take home photography awards

Two Daily Globe staff members were honored for their photography by the Michigan Press Association as part of its 2019 Better Newspaper Contest in awards announced Friday.

Sports Editor Jason Juno took first place in the feature photo category for his photo of the Wakefield Fourth of July fireworks of July 3, 2019.

Staff writer Richard Jenkins earned honorable mention for his photo of the annual Norrie Amateur Sports Club’s Christmas tree burn, held Jan. 26, 2019.

Members of the Montana Press Association reviewed 3,500 entries submitted by 106 Michigan newspapers and individual members in eight classes.

“The outstanding quality of work shows that the press is strong in Michigan and we are proud of accomplishments of all the winners,” said Richard Lamb, president of MPA and publisher of the Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook. “Based on judges comments, many categories had several entries worthy of first place. The effort by these journalists and community newspapers show that excellence is the standard for newspapers in our state.”

The MPA planned to announced the awards at its annual convention this weekend in Dearborn, but the association postponed the event due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

The Wisconsin Newspaper Association has also postponed its convention planned for next weekend in Pewaukee, Wisconsin.
