Janet 'Jann' Rose Richter

DULUTH, Minn. - Janet "Jann" Rose Richter, 78, of Ironwood, passed away on March 20, 2020, at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.

Jann, daughter of George and Dorothy (Rose) Nelson, was born Sept. 19, 1941, in Marquette, Michigan, where the Nelson family lived until she was six years old. Her family moved to Ironwood where Jann attended elementary and high school graduating from Luther L. Wright High School with the class of 1959. She went on to complete one year at Stout State College in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

But Jann was smitten with a young, handsome, rugged, farm guy from north Ironwood. After dating for a couple of years, Janet Nelson and Ray Richter were married at Salem Lutheran Church on Oct. 14, 1961. By being committed to the phrase "till death do us part," Jann and Ray celebrated 58-plus years of marriage. Ray survives.

Jann's life was filled with a passion for reading, a love of crafts and painting, and the joy of seeing and traveling the world. But those things all paled in comparison to her love for her family and a strong faith knowing she would one day walk with Jesus. She is sharing in that long-awaited walk today.

Jann's immediate family includes her husband, Ray; two sons, Todd and Brett (Sherry) both of Ironwood; her sister and best friend, Karen Damgard of Ironwood; and two grandchildren, Jake (Veronica) Richter of Marquette, Michigan, and Janet (Johnathon) Morgan of Jackson, Georgia.

Jann's family will celebrate her life in a private service at a time of their choosing. The service will be officiated by Jann's niece, the Rev. Kay S. Richter.

Jann was very specific with one final request. In lieu of flowers or plants, Jann's hope was that people would share a gift in her memory to either the Ironwood Downtown Art Place (DAP) 111 E. Aurora St., Ironwood, MI 49938 or Trinity Lutheran Church, E5104 Margaret St., Ironwood, MI 49938.

The family has chosen McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, Ironwood, to honor Jann's legacy of life. You can leave a condolence or tribute at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.
