Bessemer — The Bessemer City Council voted Monday night to change the terms of the Parks and Recreation Committee members from two years to three years, following a public hearing.

“We have to rescind that motion on two years, it should be three years, like planning commission is three, DDA commission is three. They should all be uniform. They need to be uniform,” said councilman Bill McDonald during the hearing. “You can’t have two committees on three years and one committee on two years. That’s not right.”

At the request of Mayor Adam Zak the amendment also states that “members serve at the discretion of the council and represent the city.”

“I think it may add a little definition,” Zak said. “Instead of just making this amendment. It may kinda define why we are doing it.”

Ordinance 343 originally gave committee members two-year terms and did not specify that the terms were at the discretion of the of the council.

The council also voted to allow spring weight restrictions to be lifted for emergency cases by the foreman and city manager or a designee.

“Sometimes there are times that something comes up where people want to haul something heavy on a road that is already destroyed and maybe we might work with them a little bit,” said City Manager Charly Loper.

The next council meeting will be on May 4.
