Edith L. (Koskelin) Thompson

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Edith L. (Koskelin) Thompson, 92, passed away peacefully at Norlite Nursing Center on Friday, May 15, 2020.

Edith was born the daughter of Frank and Selma (Wiirtenen) Koskelin in Eagle River, Wisconsin, on Jan. 5, 1928.

Edith was joined in marriage to Howard J. Thompson on Jan. 25, 1947.

Edith was a stay-at-home mom in her early years of marriage. As time went on, Edith worked in various jobs, her first one as a waitress at Clem's Restaurant. In addition, she worked for the state of Michigan with lower income families, helping provide healthy diets. Edith also was a clerk at the post office in Watersmeet where she lived and later became the postmaster until 1987 when she retired. From there, she moved to Marquette to be closer to her family.

Edith was a life-long DAV Auxiliary member, a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and also was part of the "Over the Hill Gang" in 2010 where she was again able to participate in projects that gave back to the community while living in Marquette.

Edith relished in the opportunity to share and be a part of all events in her family. She was a wonderful combination of warmth, kindness, laughter, and love to all who crossed her path. She enjoyed life, family, and friends. Edith was always there to brighten the lives of others. Whether it be an ear to listen, advice, sharing a story, adventures, or one of her "big hugs," her genuine love was always felt. Edith especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren of whom she was able to leave many fond memories with.

On behalf of Edith's family, a special thank you to all of the staff at Norlite Nursing Center for the loving care, kindness and friendship they so freely gave to Edith during her years there. They truly are heroes during this unprecedented difficult time.

Edith is survived by her son, Martin Thompson; granddaughter, Renea (Kurt) Hamalainen; step-grandchildren, Dylan and Candace Drobny; and great-grandchildren, Andre, Aden and Lilya Hamalainen; as well as many more special family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Selma; her husband, Howard; sisters, Esther and Irene; and brothers, Leo, Edward, Wayne, Nels, Arvi, Isaac (Bill), and Elmer (Toy).

Due to the current circumstances, a private graveside service will take place at Northland Chapel Gardens in Negaunee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Edith's name to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1700 W. Fair Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.
