Mary Margaret DeZur

ASHLAND, Wis. - Mary Margaret DeZur, 88, passed away peacefully May 12, 2020, in Ashland, Wisconsin.

She was born May 2, 1932, in Trout Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Thomas and Jennifer (Pelkola) Metos. Mary graduated from J.E. Murphy High School in Hurley in 1951. Following graduation, she married the love of her life, Thomas V. DeZur on July 30, 1951. They settled in Saxon, Wisconsin, where they raised their family, two daughters, Shirley and Patricia and two sons, David and Anthony.

Her greatest accomplishment was her family, whom she loved dearly. She took great pride in caring for them, cooking dinner and baking desserts every night while they all shared stories about their day. She also loved sauna, playing bingo with her sister, Jennie, playing cards, soap operas, bird watching, gardening, listening to Elvis and Johnny Cash, and loved watching the Packers and the Bucks. She had a feistiness and wit about her, along with a tenacity that was admirable. She loved visits with her family, most recently having attended her son-in-law, David's 70th birthday party, along with her daughter, Shirley, her grandchildren, Heather, Chris, and Tracy, and great-grandchildren, Parker, Paige, and Preston. It was a very memorable occasion that she thoroughly enjoyed. She brought a lot of love and light into her family's life; and she will be thoroughly missed.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Jennifer Metos; husband, Thomas DeZur; sons, David and Anthony DeZur; grandson, Austin Thomas Ahola; sister, Jennie Koski; and brothers, George, John, and Robert Metos.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirley (David) Smith of Helena, Montana, and Patricia (William) Ahola of Montreal; grandchildren, Heather Smith-Hillman of Ironwood, Michigan, Christopher Smith of Denver, Colorado, Tracy (Smith) Jellison of Helena, Montana, Ashley (Ahola) Howell of San Antonio, Texas, David DeZur of Oelwein, Iowa, Holly (DeZur) Tomlinson of Menasha, Josh DeZur of Delafield, and Dayle (Soine) Bugalski of Waukesha; sisters, Katherine Moilanen, Effie Thomas, Sylvia Sain, and Dorothy Metos; brothers, James, Thomas, and Alex Metos; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2020, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Cemetery in Hurley.
