Hurley - Those driving along Wisconsin 77 through Hurley may notice that a new fire danger sign was installed on Tuesday.

The new sign replaces a weathered sign on the south side of the highway at the snowmobile/all-terrain vehicle trail on Iron County land adjacent to the Cary Mine Convenience Store. Station owner Bob Walesewicz has been changing out the fire condition signs to indicate low, medium or high level fire danger for more than 10 years.

"They moved the new sign back from the motorized trail a little bit to give snowmobilers and ATV riders some more clearance," Walesewicz said. "There is nice visibility."

Chuck Norgren, a forestry technician with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at the Mercer station, said he bought two replacement signs five years ago when the money was in the budget. He built the frames and painted the signs himself.

"A lot of people come to Hurley for supplies and then go out to their cabins this way," Norgren said. "So, it makes really good sense to have it here."

The support from the Iron County Highway Department in providing an auger and Kurt Kluhsman, heavy equipment operator, meant Norgren didn't have to drive his own trailer and auger up from the Mercer station office.
