Ironwood adds dairy to food offerings

Ironwood — Families getting food at the Ironwood Area Schools' weekly distribution got an additional benefit Monday, as the district started adding dairy to its offerings.

“We are going to keep doing dairy throughout the summer, as long as the program from the government is still available,” Ironwood Food Service Director Mary Hampston Kusz said, explaining the dairy was received through a program designed to help dairy farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. “We'll do it as long as we can.”

Hampston Kusz said the district received 480 boxes of dairy to distribute Monday, with each family getting one box.

She said the boxes included milk, strawberry and chocolate milk, sour cream, french onion dip, cottage cheese and cream cheese.

The dairy distribution will be in addition to the district's summer lunch program, according to Hampston Kusz, and isn't limited to families with kids in the district.

“If you're from Wakefield or Bessemer or Hurley, you're more than welcome to come,” she said.

Ironwood will also continue to distribute produce boxes on Wednesdays through the remainder of the month of June, according to Hampston Kusz, with some meat being given out along with the produce while supplies last.

“This week, there will about 140 families (that) will get a 5-pound bag of chicken,” Hampston Kusz said.
