Hurley — The Hurley City Council on Monday approved the Halloween trick-or-treating hours following a recommendation from law enforcement to let the event go forward with safety guidelines rather than cancel this year due to COVID-19.

The council set the Halloween trick-or-treating hours for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. Guidelines for pandemic trick-or-treating will be posted on the city’s Facebook page, along with the city police department and Iron County Sheriff’s Office Facebook pages.

The council is asking residents to leave porch lights off if they are not participating in trick-or-treating this year to discourage visitors. People who are not feeling well should not participate whether trick-or-treating or handing out treats.

The council approved a finance committee recommendation for a $5,000 down payment toward an $80,000 pre-owned dump truck to be purchased in 2021. The down payment will secure the present purchase price until next year, said street commissioner Scott Santini.

The council approved another recommendation of the finance committee for the $14,000 purchase of WorkForce Software Services, a software system designed for small to medium-sized Wisconsin municipalities. The transfer from the current system to WorkForce will occur through the remainder of the year with the transition occurring on Jan. 1, 2021, according to Stacey Wiercinski, city clerk and treasurer.

The council discussed the structure at 306 Maple St., which reportedly burned some time ago and the debris was not cleared. The site is currently presenting a safety hazard and people are concerned, said Robert Lanctoe, council alderman.

Mayor Jay Aijala said a notice letter to clear the site will be sent to the owner.

“We have to put our foot down and get that building down,” Aijala said.

The council took no action on a proposal for playground equipment due to winter storage issues.
