Ontonagon — The Ontonagon Area School Board rated Superintendent Jim Bobula as “highly effective” after an evaluation following a special board meeting Monday.

The evaluation was conducted using the Michigan Association of School’s Superintendent Evaluation Instrument.

“Jim Bobula’s financial stewardship, especially during this time of COVID 19, have proven to be outstanding. Under Jim’s guidance, the district continues to move forward, in spite of the challenges during the pandemic,” the board said in a written statement.

At the special meeting, the board also approved a revised 2020-2021 school calendar to give students two days longer for Christmas vacation. The revised calendar indicates that Dec. 21 and 22 will be non-session school days. Bobula said the district was able to document that a professional development day in the building prior to the start of school, which was attended by all the staff, qualified for the non-session school day. Bobula said information will go out to families so they are informed.

The retirement of guidance counselor Tammy Lancinoni caused some additions to the duties of several others since Lancioni was not replaced. The board approved amended extra duty contracts for Dean of Students Jon Uotila to include a stipend for extra duties performed during his prep time and for extended work days for the 2020-2021 school year; Tim Routheaux, M-Step, MME and ACT and SAT coordinator for the 2020-2021 school year; and Jodi Store for K-12 class scheduling, work-based learning scheduling and pupil accounting duties associated with guidance counseling for the 2010-2021 school year.

The board also approved the and extra duty contract for Bobula who besides being superintendent is also special education director for the 2020-2021 year. This was the same as last year.

The board also approved the hazard pay stipends pay for remaining support staff totaling $16,000. The funds came from the CARES Act.
