MERCER, Wis. — There is still time for skiers and snowshoers to participate in the MECCA Trails Winterfest. The fundraising event has been extended through March 28 and trail conditions are “pretty good,” according to Beth Wetzler of the Winterfest committee.

“I think sometimes people are scared that there’s not going to be good conditions (in the spring), but actually conditions can be pretty good in the spring. Some people it is their favorite time of year to ski and snowshoe,” Wetzler said.

However, she said she does advise those interested in skiing the trials to come earlier in the day as the snow has a tendency to melt and then refreeze at night, which leaves a “nice sort of crust,” for early morning skiers. She recommends skiing before noon, if possible.

“Spring skiing is all about watching the weather and the temperatures,” Wetzler said in a press release. “When nightly temps drop below freezing, the trails are fast in the morning. If temps get above 32 degrees during the day the surface will soften.”

The Winterfest consists of four events; the Turtle River Pursuit, an 11K classic or 11K skate race, the 5K Claire de Loon Classic Fun Race, the new Flowage 15K Freestyle, as well as the new Mercer Springs Snowshoe Tour, which has 1-, 2-, and 3-mile options.

The events are being held virtually this year because of the pandemic. This allows the participant the freedom to choose the day and time he or she wishes to perform the event. Participants are able to check the trail conditions on meccatrails.com, the trail association’s Facebook page, and SkinnySki.com. The conditions are updated regularly according to a press release.
