Mary Jane Cunico

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Mary Jane Cunico, 91 of Hurley, passed away on Friday, June 4, 2021, at the Aspirus Ironwood Hospital.

She was born on May 14, 1930, to Gasper and Rose (Messina) Schiera in Chicago, Illinois. Mary met the love of her life, Ottilio Cunico; and they married in Chicago on Feb. 23, 1953. Both second generation Italians, they were very happily married for 60 years. In 1968 they moved to Hurley and have resided there until her passing.

After working as a receptionist for Dr. Lepore for 10 years, Mary settled into the life of living on a farm along with just being a loving mom and housewife. One of her greatest passions was caring for her animals, along with whatever needy creature was lucky enough to get her attention. At 91 years young she still cared for her two dogs, chickens, and her horse, Belle. Any visitors were made to feel welcome and wouldn't leave hungry or without a hug and kiss from Mary.

She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley.

Mary is survived by her sons, David (Lynn), Richard (Kathy) both of Hurley and Timothy (Cheryl) of Pence; her daughters, Barbara (Joe) Dennis of Hurley and Janine Strand of Ironwood; sister, Ann Freund of Lincolnshire, Illinois; grandchildren, Christopher Dennis, Nichole Doornek, Heather Verbos, Joelle Bouri Joshua Cunico, Anthony Cunico, Melissa Sutherland, Tiffany Hanson, Jessica Cunico, Brea Turner, Brandon Cunico, Brock Cunico, Brad Strand, Justin Strand, and Tyler Strand; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Ottilio in 2013; her beloved grandson, Cody in 2016; sister, Fran; brother, John

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood with Father Binu Joseph presiding. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Inurnment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Hurley.
