Ironwood - The city of Ironwood's utilities department started removing the blacktop on VanBuskirk Road between Pioneer Road and Normandy Avenue last week.

According to the city's Utilities Manager Bob Tervonen, VanBuskirk is being excavated to replace the water main under the road. He said that construction crew will replace 800 feet of the water main.

The city is also replacing the water main and sewer lines on West Pewabic Street, he said.

Tervonen said that city residents in these areas will experience periodic water service disruptions and discoloration during the replacements.

The water main replacements at West Pewabic and VanBuskirk are scheduled to be completed by July 2, according to a release from the city.

The city is replacing these water mains first because they are the areas that need replacements the most, Tervonen said.

He said that the current water main on VanBuskirk was installed when the street was first paved 70 to 80 years ago.

A damaged water main valve at the intersection of U.S. 2 and Florence Street is also being repaired today, which may cause a change in water pressure or discoloration. Repairs are scheduled to be completed by noon, Tervonen said.
