Harold Oliver Vuorenmaa

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Harold Oliver Vuorenmaa, 91, of Ironwood Township, passed away in the comfort of his home Saturday evening, July 31, 2021.

Harold was born on June 19, 1930, in Ironwood, a son of Eric and Selina (Kitula) Vuorenmaa. He attended Roosevelt School and graduated in 1949.

He was a hard and dedicated worker. Harold worked at Ahonen Lumber Company, was a milkman for Wally Curik, Ironwood Products and as a rural postal carrier.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army from October 1951 to September 1953. Throughout his life, Harold was proud of his Finnish heritage and was a member at Little Finland. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and running his dogs as a member of the Gogebic Range Beagle Club. Harold was quick witted and always cracked jokes.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Irene (Niemi) Vuorenmaa; son, David (Kandy) Vuorenmaa; daughters, Maria Liisa (Darrel) Detwiler and Paula and her longtime companion, Steve Korpela; grandsons, Matt Manzanares, Trevor (Monica) Vuorenmaa and Dylan Detwiler; granddaughters, Whitney (Sean) Vernetti and Miranda Manzanares; great-grandchildren, Evan, Eveliina and Jaxton; his four sisters-in-law, Shirley, Marlene, Darlene and Marilyn Vuorenmaa; and several nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Elmi Jolgren and Lillian Cornwall; and 11 brothers, Eino, John, Oiva, Arvo, Sulo, Niilo, Toivo, Laurie, Kenneth, William and Elmer, in infancy.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, E5071 Airport Road in Ironwood Township.

Interment will take place at Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Township, where full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family kindly requests a donation be made to St. John's Lutheran Church.

Jerald Rocco, owner and manager of Lakeside Memorial Chapel Inc., in Wakefield, is assisting the family with their arrangements.
