David Lee Oja

ROCHESTER, Minn. - David Lee Oja, 64, a lifelong resident of Ironwood, Michigan, died unexpectedly on Sept. 9, 2021, from complications of open-heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

David was born on Jan. 26, 1957, in Ironwood to Edwin and Sylvia (Siirila) Oja. He graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1975.

David was a lumber grader who worked at various sawmills throughout his life.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved grouse hunting, deer hunting, rabbit hunting and fishing. He enjoyed being at the Oja hunting camp with family and friends.

For years David was active in the trapshooting league, Range Beagle Clubs, and the local cribbage league. He was a member of the Norrie Club for the past 53 years and most recently was helping out bar tending.

He is survived by his special best friend, Diana, of 31 years; his children, Megan of Duluth, and Jason of Abbotsford, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Cole, Tyler and MaKenzie; brothers, Jim Oja and Dennis "Jay" (Joan) Oja; sister, Jean (Pearce) Graham; nieces and nephews, Pam, Jill, Heather, Aaron, Jay, Joshua, Brian, Mike and Lisa; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Sylvia Oja; sister, Joan Oja; and nephews, Justin Oja and Keith Graham.

Per Dave's request, there will be no funeral.

There will be a celebration of Dave's life on Oct. 9, starting at 1 p.m. at the Norrie Club in Ironwood. A potluck meal is being planned.

The family has chosen McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home of Ironwood to honor David's legacy of life.
