David Milton Hjalmquist

IRONWOOD, Mich. - David Milton Hjalmquist, 92, of Ironwood passed away on Nov. 4, 2021, at his home in Ironwood.

David was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Ironwood, the son of the late Lars and Mamie (Nyman) Hjalmquist. He graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1947, then attended Gogebic Junior College, and attended Michigan State University graduating in 1955. Dave was a veteran of the Korean War where he received the French Croix De Guerre in honor of his service with the French Forces.

On June 21, 1958, he was united in marriage to Joyce Ann Bergman at Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood.

Dave worked for John D. Morrison Company and Ernst & Ernst before being employed by O.K. Auto Parts in Ironwood where he worked for 25 years. He was chief financial officer and treasurer during that tenure. After retiring in 1987, he managed the Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood for one year.

Dave was a lifelong member of Salem Lutheran Church where he was financial secretary and treasurer for 21 years and also served on the church council and was an usher for 45 years. He was a life member of the local Elks Lodge where he was a past Exalted Ruler and also served as treasurer for 13 years. He also served on the local school board from 1967 to 1975 and served as president twice. He also served on the Ironwood Police and Fireman's Pension Board for 16 years, was an honorary member of the Women's Hospital Auxiliary for several years, and also served as treasurer for Classic Capers twice.

He loved to play golf, vacation in Florida, and spend time with his grandchildren.

Dave is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Jeri (Joe Brown) of Ironwood; son, David (Mikki) of Ankeny, Iowa; granddaughters, Jillyn of Raleigh, North Carolina and Robyn (Travis Yets) of Ankeny, Iowa; special daughter No. 2, Chris (Carl) Lahti of Ironwood; brothers, Carl (Joan) Hjalmquist and Lars (Joan) Hjalmquist; brother-in-law, James (Mary) Bergman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lars and Mamie Hjalmquist; sister, Elly Conroy; and in-laws, Leonard and Elma Bergman.

We would like to thank the Aspirus Hospice nurses for their care over the last few weeks.

A memorial service will be held at Salem Lutheran Church in Ironwood on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Nicole Hanson-Lynn officiating, preceded by a visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
