Snowshoe walks explore local trails

If it's Wednesday, there's a snowshoe outing awaiting outdoor enthusiasts in the region, thanks to organizers of the Superior Snowshoe Walks.

The weekly group snowshoe walks are marking their 11th season in 2022, according to organizers Sam and Anne Davey.

The series of Wednesday walks are scheduled on various trails in the region. Snowshoers of all abilities are welcome.

There are two roughly hour-long walks each Wednesday, both at the same trail assigned for that week - one at 1 p.m. and the other at 6:30 p.m. For the evening walks, headlights or flashlights are recommended.

In years past before the pandemic, the group would often meet afterward for food, but due to social distancing concerns there will be no indoor food gatherings this year.

The group has had three walks so far, on trails from the Michigan Welcome Center in Ironwood, at Bluff Valley Park in Bessemer, and along the Cottonwood Tree Trail from Randa Field in Ironwood.

This coming Wednesday's snowshoe walk will be at Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood.

The remaining schedule includes:

-Feb. 2: Miners Memorial Heritage Park's Red Devil Loop from the trailhead on East Ayer Street at the baseball field in Ironwood.

-Feb. 9: Schaumburg Park at 9701 N. U.S. 51 south of Hurley in Oma.

-Feb.16: Miners Memorial Heritage Park's Pabst Blue Ribbon Loop starting at the Ironwood city garage on Penokee Road.

-Feb. 23: Michigan Welcome Center on Cloverland Drive in Ironwood.

-March 2: No walk, as it is Ash Wednesday.

-March 9: Mt. Zion on the campus of Gogebic Community College with the walk starting at base of ski hill.

-March 16: Wolverine Ski Trails at 5851 Sunset Road in Ironwood Township. This event will include an outdoor potluck cook out with bonfire. Bring a dish to pass, drinks and chairs to sit outside.
