John Henry Steinmetz Jr.

IRONWOOD, Mich. - John Henry Steinmetz Jr., 90 of Ironwood and formally a long-time resident of Saxon, Wisconsin, passed away at the Aspirus Hospital in Ironwood on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021.

John was born to John H. Sr. and Edna C. (Demers) Steinmetz on June 21, 1931, in Ironwood.

John proudly served in the U.S. Navy, welding as an aircraft mechanic. He was a member of the Mercier American Legion Post 424.

John worked as a welder for several local mines and in Texas making mine shafts. He had owned and operated Steinmetz Sawmill along with farming in Saxon.

On July 19, 1952, John was united in marriage with Theresa Berube at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Saxon. John was later united in marriage with Laura J. (Huvila) Niemi on Feb. 14, 2021, in Ironwood.

John was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Saxon.

He loved building and collecting guns, hunting, fishing on Lake Superior and in Texas, reading Westerns, building projects, woodworking and spending time in his workshop.

John is survived by his three sons, John Steinmetz III of Thorp, Wisconsin, Thomas (Vicky) Steinmetz of North Dakota, and Tim (Joanne) Steinmetz of Arizona; five daughters, Linda (Jim) Loon of Minnesota, Debi Steinmetz, Sandra (Keith) Marshall and Terese (Jim) Baures, all of Thorp, and Julie (John) Sime of Gordon, Wisconsin; 21 grandchildren, Lance, Alea, Ashle, Matthew, Kendra, John IV, Tyler, Bridget, Brianna, Brandon, Britony, Bronson, Shilo, Shaina, Savannah, Arizona, Dakota, Holly, Tiffany, Tawny and Jacob; and 24 great-grandchildren. John is further survived by other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lori Elloitt; brothers and sister in infancy; and his sister, Sally Steinmetz.

No formal funeral services are taking place at this time but will take place this coming summer.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Aspirus Hospital for the care their dad received. They would also like to thank Laura's family for their care.
