MONTREAL, Wis. - Northern Iron County Engaged Residents and the Penokee Rangers Trail Corps are planning the fourth annual Hygge Hike by candlelight at the Historic Montreal Ski Trails from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 26.

According to NICER, the organizers decided to continue with the candlelight snowshoe theme of the hike following the success of last year's event.

A 1.5-mile portion of the Montreal Ski Trails will be lined with luminaria, bonfires and Swedish torches. There will also be hot chocolate and a few other surprises along the way, a press release said.

Participants are also encouraged to wear anything that glows - such as glow sticks, LED light vests and reflective clothing - to help light up the trail for the hike.

The release from NICER also says that the University of Wisconsin-Madison Iron County Extension office will have its community snowshoes available to use for free at the event for anyone who does not have their own snowshoes, with kids and adult sizes to choose from.

The event will be free, but a donation of $10 per family is suggested by the organizers, with the proceeds to benefit NICER and the Penokee Rangers, who maintain the Montreal Ski Trails on a volunteer basis. Donations will be collected at the trailhead.

To volunteer and help with the event, arrive at the Rose Wreath Trailhead at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 26 to assist with setting up. Volunteers will also be needed to light the candles starting at 4:45 p.m. on the day of the event.
