IRONWOOD, Mich. - Gladys June Salmi (nee Alatalo), 88, of Ironwood, passed away on Feb. 12, 2022, at Westgate Nursing Home, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood, surrounded by her devoted daughters, Gayla, Mari and Lynn.
She was born in Calumet on June 5, 1933, the daughter of Otto and Hilma Alatalo. She graduated from high school in Hancock and also attended Gogebic Community College in her 40s and became an LPN. She worked in nursing in White Pine and Ontonagon, and retired in her 70s.
Gladys enjoyed swimming and last swam in Lake Superior at 80 years old.
She was the center of her family and was a wonderful cook and baker.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Gayla Salmi of Ashland, Wisconsin, Mari Salmi of Texas, and Lynn Coron of Ironwood; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Hilma Alatalo; sister, Joyce Keskitalo; foster brother, Paulie Kuopus; Roy Salmi (married 34 years); and sons, Fred and Frank Salmi.
The family would like to thank Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community for their compassionate and wonderful care, Dr. Eric Maki in the Emergency Room at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital, and Mr. Andrew Tait and nurse, Julee, for their great care.
