The Ironwood City Commission adopted “slightly increased” campground rates for Curry Park at its regular meeting on Monday.

City Manager Scott Erickson said that these increased rates will help mitigate the costs of some of the city’s new projects in the park, including the adoption a new system that will allow people to register a spot at the campground online before their visit.

The city manager said that Curry Park campground spots have been open to people on a first come, first served basis. He said they think the new system will significantly increase use of the park because people will know that they will have a registered spot in the park to come to before visiting, which was previously uncertain.

There was some cost associated with implementing this new system and the increased rates will pass this cost down to the users. Community Development Specialist Tim Erickson said that they chose these rates by comparing them with other parks’ rates.

The new campground rates are $35 for an RV site with full hookup, $25 for a tent or RV site with electricity only, $15 for a tent-only site, $210 weekly fee with full hookup sites, $15 dumping fee and $15 to fill tanks with water.

Campers must make a reservation before setting up any site.

The city commission approved an agreement with Coleman Engineering for professional engineering services for a sewer lining project. Coleman Engineering with provide the designs for the project and then the city will call for bids. Erickson said they hope to complete the project this summer.

Erickson said that instead of digging the sewers up, they plan to line them underground, which will have minimal disruptions to downtown businesses. He said that the locations for this project are predominately in downtown Ironwood, along with two small spots on Pewabic and Francis streets.

Andrew DiGiorgio, director of the Ironwood Public Safety Department, asked the city commission to approve the sale of the duty weapon of Lt. Adam Clemens to the Ironwood Professional Police Association for $1, to be presented to Clemens upon retirement.

“Effective Saturday, Lt. Adam Clemens retired after a 27-year career,” DiGiorgio said. “He served the city well and will be missed by many. One of the practices we’ve done in the past is sell his duty weapon and provide it to him upon his retirement.”

The city commission approved the sale of the duty weapon, with Mayor Kim Corcoran calling it “a nice gesture.”

The city commission also approved the purchase of firefighting gear for the public safety department. DiGiorgio said that they replace some equipment every year because it has a 10-year lifespan by National Fire Protection Association standards and they need to outfit new officers with proper gear.
