HURLEY, Wis. - Carl Henry Raisanen, 82, of Hurley, and former Ontonagon and Mass City, Michigan, resident, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff, following a lengthy illness.
Carl was born March 29, 1940, in Negaunee, Michigan, to Karlo and Hilja (Hyvonen) Raisanen, grew up in Palmer, Michigan, and graduated from Negaunee High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 until his honorable discharge in 1963. Following his service to his country, he worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Detroit before returning to the Upper Peninsula where he worked numerous jobs before working as a machinist at the paper mill in Ontonagon, from which he retired.
In his spare time, Carl enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing, and enjoyed playing both the mandolin and guitar. He also could be found cross country skiing in the winters and riding his motorcycle in the warm months. Carl was also a gifted woodworker and enjoyed woodcarving. He was extremely devoted to his family, and was proud to have helped care for his mom and brother over the years when they needed it the most.
Surviving are his nieces and nephews, Nancy Young, Judy (Ray) Sandy, Patty (Larry) Bowman, Bob Raisanen, Dale (Susie) Raisanen and Brook Raisanen; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Theodore "Ted," Frank and Leslie Raisanen; niece-in-law, Heidi Raisanen; and a great-nephew, David Store.
Graveside services and military honors will be held Wednesday, May 25, at 1 p.m. at the Negaunee Cemetery, with Virginia Paulson officiating.
