The fourth-grade boys struggle in a game of tug-of-war against their female counterparts outside Luther L. Wright K-12 School in Ironwood as part of a "summer blast" field day on Tuesday. Despite strong efforts from the boys and some last-minute help from fourth grade teacher Daniel Nego, the girls won this round.

Ironwood — In anticipation of the today’s last day of school, kindergarteners through sixth graders from Luther L. Wright K-12 School in Ironwood on Tuesday played on the school’s track and football field and in the school gymnasium in a “blast off” to summer. The event was coordinated by the Ironwood PTO.
“In the past, we’ve called it ‘field day,’ but this year, we totally switched it up with the bounce houses and stuff, so we called it ‘summer blast’ instead,” outgoing PTO president Danielle Virshek said.
As Virshek said, inflatable bounce houses were the main attraction this year. They were set up in the school’s first floor gymnasium because of high winds outside. However, the weather was otherwise fair and there were outdoor activities for students as well, including a cornhole toss, tug-of-war and a dunk tank. The students were rotated through the gym and outside by class, spending 45 minutes on each.
Ironwood Area Schools staff, including K-12 Principal Melissa Nigh and Ironwood Board of Education member Adam Graser, Gogebic County Undersheriff Jorge Cruz and Ironwood Public Safety Officer Matthew Sterbenz, sat above a dunk tank and students had the chance to drop them into the water below. Virshek said that water for the tank was provided by the Ironwood Township Fire Department.
Virshek said more than 25 volunteers were involved in the event, including members of the PTO, the high school cheerleading team, the Ironwood Public Safety Department, the Gogebic County Sheriff’s Department and Ironwood Township Fire Department.
